The election of Dhaka City Corporation is likely to be held in late January or February with the Election Commission planning a trial run of electronic voting system in the polls.
“We’ll try to introduce e-voting system at least in a ward during the election to Dhaka City Corporation,” Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda told reporters today after a meeting at the Election Commission Secretariat.
The CEC said the Election Commission could now formulate regulations for holding elections in the national metropolis with the parliament passing The Local Government (City Corporation) Bill 2009.
Sources at the Election Commission said the commission was planning to introduce electronic voting system since the existing system was very expensive.
He said manual voting required huge money in arranging ballot papers and ballot boxes, apart from allegations of vote rigging.
SM Lutful Kabir, director of the Institute of Information Communication Technology of BUET, had earlier briefed the EC Secretariat on the e-voting system.
