Explain legality of 223 bureaucrats’ promotion: HC
Star Online Report
The High Court today issued a rule upon the government to explain within four weeks why the promotion of 223 government officials would not be declared illegal.
The HC bench of Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice Md Moinul Islam Chowdhury issued the rule upon a writ petition.
On September 7, the government promoted 60 officials to the rank of additional secretary and 163 to the rank of joint secretary.
Quamrul Haque Siddiqui, a lawyer of the Supreme Court, recently filed the petition as public interest litigation with the HC challenging the legality of the government action promoting the officials.
The petitioner stated that the promotions breached the constitutional provision of offering equal opportunity in government appointments.
Appointment of unqualified people in the administration would leave the public deprived of the services they deserve, he said.
The establishment secretary, cabinet secretary and 223 promoted officers were asked to reply of the rule.
