In tears, he recalls wife, daughter’s torture in ’71
Dhaka, Jan 29 (bdnews24.com) — Giving testimony lying down on a hospital bed, the prosecution’s 23rd witness against Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee could not hold back his tears on Wednesday, remembering his long-lost wife and daughter soon after the 1971 Liberation War.
Octogenarian Madhusudan Gharami told the war crimes tribunal that Razakars, a notorious band of collaborators during the war, had attacked his house and raped his wife.
The International Crimes Tribunal has indicted the Jamaat-e-Islami executive council member on 20 counts of crimes, including murder, rape, arson and loot.

EC search panel invites names
Dhaka, Jan 25 (bdnews24.com) — The search committee has invited the political parties that had dialogues with the president to put up their nominees for the chief and members of the new Election Commission.
The move was decided from the maiden meeting of the committee held at the Supreme Court conference room on Wednesday.
Senior information officer of the Cabinet Division Munshi Jalal Uddin in a media statement said each of those political party can propose a maximum of five names with bio-data of the nominees to the Cabinet Division secretary by 3pm on Jan 29.
Mouded gets anticipatory bail in tax-evasion case
DHAKA: The High Court on Monday granted anticipatory bail for two months to former law minister and BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed in a tax-evasion case.
Upon a bail petition filed by the BNP leader, the HC bench comprising Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice Shahidul Karim passed the order.
Earlier on Sunday, Moudud Ahmed was summoned by a Dhaka court to appear it on February 7 in the case filed by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) against him.
NBR Deputy Commissioner Shah Mohammad Hasan filed the case accusing Moudud of dodging income tax worth Tk 6.86 crore from 1997 to 2007.

DHAKA: The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Sunday is continuing the hearing on a formal petition filed by the prosecution against BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury in connection with crimes against humanity committed during Liberation War in 1971.

DHAKA, JAN 5: Chairman of the Square Group and a leading businessman of the country, Samson H Chowdhury breathed his last at a Singapore hospital on Thursday morning while undergoing treatment there for old age complications. He was 86, company sources said.

Two bureaucrats appointed to head split DCC
DHAKA, DEC 4: The government Sunday appointed two senior bureaucrats as administrators for the newly split Dhaka City Corporations under the new rules passed in parliament last month.
An official announcement said Director General of Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET) Khorshed Alam Chowdhury has been appointed administrator to DCC North while additional secretary to the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education Khalilur Rahman was given the responsibility of DCC South.
Both of them belong to BCS 1982 batch administration cadre and now are of the rank of additional secretary to the government.

Court summons Dhaka DC, ADC
Dhaka, Nov 29 (bdnews24.com) – A Dhaka court has summoned the Dhaka deputy commissioner (DC) for hearing an appeal against the verdict of a mobile court beyond his jurisdiction.
Besides DC Mohibul Haque, the court also summoned additional DC (acquisition) Zillur Rahman Chowdhury on Tuesday.
Judge Mohammad Aktharuzzaman of the Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court ordered them to appear at 10.30 am Wednesday.

AL names 5 for reserved seats

DU confers Doctor of Laws degree on UN Chief
DHAKA, NOV 15: University of Dhaka on Tuesday conferred honorary doctor of laws degree upon the visiting UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, in recognition of his tireless efforts for the establishment of global peace.
President Zillur Rahman, as the chancellor of the university, conferred the degree and a crest at a special convocation at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of the University of Dhaka.
