Power price hike Wednesday

Dhaka, Jan 31 (bdnews24.com) – Bulk power prices will go up from Wednesday, as announced by the government last year.

Bulk power will cost Tk 3.74 from 3.27.

On average, all power tariff rates at the retail level will be raised to Tk 5.02 from Tk 4.71 per BoT unit, marking a 7.09 percent rise.

Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission in November last year announced hiking the power price at retail levels by a total of 21.28 percent in two phases.

BSF returns body, another found near border

2 drown in Munshiganj quicksand

Two friends died after sinking into a quicksand in a shoal of the river Padma in Munshiganj Friday afternoon. Hailing from the capital’s old part, Rafiqul Islam Rocky, 21, and Faizul Islam, 20, and their friends went to the shoal in Mawa to spend the weekend.

When they were playing football in the shoal, three including Rocky and Faizul got stuck in the quicksand, reports our correspondent in Munshiganj.

Local fishermen rescued the three immediately and rushed them to Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared Rocky and Faizul dead, said Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sreenagar Police Station.

40 hurt in Munshiganj clash

At least 40 people were injured including 15 by bullets in a gunfight between two groups of people in Tongibari upazila of Munshiganj Wednesday morning.

The injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and Munshiganj General Hospital, reports our Munshiganj correspondent.

The clash ensued around 9:00am between supporters of Noor Mohammad, chairman of Kathadia-Shimulia Union Parisad (UP), and Shamsuddin Miah, a member of Ward No-6 of the union, over sharing the money collected from the local cattle markets, said Kazi Daud Hossain, officer-in-charge of Tongibari Police Station.

Narayanganj, Oct 30 (bdnews24.com) – BNP-backed mayor candidate Taimur Alam Khandaker, who announced polls boycott late on Saturday night, considers himself a ‘dead man’ at the moment as the maiden Narayanganj City Corporation election results reach final rounds.

“I am a dead man in this result,” Taimur told bdnews24.com when approached for his comment over the election results that showed Selina Hayet Ivy clearly ahead of her nearest rival Awami League-backed Shamim Osman, with him trailing far behind in vote count, at the third position.

5 Teletalk officials rescued from jungle

Law enforcers rescued five Teletalk officials from a jungle in Panchhari Upazila in Khagrachhari on Monday six hours after their abduction.

The officials included junior officer Ahsan Hossain Tapu, Engineer Rajot Barua, Sales Representative Azizul Hoq, Nur Hossain Ridoy and Dealer Tareq Hossain Chowdhury.

Abu Kalam Siddique, superintendent of police in Khagrachhari, said a gang of criminals at around 11:00am abducted the officials by stopping their car on their way to Panchhari to set a network tower.

He said the miscreants belong to the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF), a group of indigenous people protesting against the Chittagong Hill Tracts peace treaty.

Indefinite transport strike starts in Bogra

The motor owners and workers of Bogra enforced an indefinite transport strike Saturday morning, demanding the withdrawal of a BRTA decision over the use of a bypass in the district.

The strike started around 6:00am Saturday and has interrupted communications between 11 northern districts of the country and Dhaka, causing untold suffering to commuters, reports our Bogra correspondent.

Md Hanif, 35, who travelled from Dhaka without having knowledge of the strike, told the correspondent that he was waiting at Bogra bus terminal since the morning for a Joypurhat-bound bus.

3 die in Ctg road accident

Three people were killed and four injured when a CNG-run tempo rammed a bus stationed at Agrabad in Chittagong city Sunday night.

The deceased are Mohsin, 40, Md Abbas Miah, 38, and Md Saiful Islam, 27, reports our Chittagong correspondent.

Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Double Mooring Police Station, said the accident occurred near Agrabad Radio office at about 10:00pm.

Local people rescued the injured passengers of the three-wheeler and took them to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where doctors declared the trio dead.

Injured Md Hasan, 22, is now undergoing treatment at the medical college hospital, said CMCH police outpost sources.

1 killed in pre-poll violence

A supporter of a union parishad chairman candidate was chopped to death on Sunday, just two and a half hours before the elections began in Kalkini upazila of Madaripur.

The deceased, Mohabbat Ali Sharder, 60, a resident of Notun Char Doulatkhan village in the upazila, was a supporter of Mannan Sharder, a chairman candidate of Char Doulatkhan union, reports our Madaripur correspondent.

Locals said a gang of miscreants called Mohabbat out of his house at about 5:30am and chopped him to death.

The criminals left the spot after leaving the body at a nearby field.

Mawa ferry service resumes after 43hrs

Ferry service on Mawa-Kawrakandi route resumed around 8:00am Saturday after 43 hours of disruption due to stormy weather.

Ashiquzzaman, deputy managing director of Mawa office of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), said the authorities stopped the ferry movement at about 1:00pm Thursday due to inclement weather.

Over 600 vehicles got stranded on both sides of the river due to suspension of the ferry service, reports our Munshiganj correspondent.

The service resumed at around 8:00am Saturday, the official said.

BCL to hold nat’l council

A two-day much-waited national council of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student wing of Awami League, will begin on July 10 at Bangbandhu Inter-national Conference Centre in city after a lapse of nearly five and a half years.

Marking the assembly, BCL Wednesday organised a press conference at the Madhu’s Canteen of Dhaka University (DU). BCL president Mahmud Hasan Ripon has announced the schedule at the conference, while Secretary General Mahfuzul Haider Chow-dhury Roton, among others, addressed the press conference.

BCL DU unit council will also be held on June 30 at the Institute of Engineers in the city, unit president Sheikh Sohel Rana Tipu said.

Fire in Secretariat

Dhaka: Fire has broken out at the power sub-control room of a building of secretariat in the capital this (Monday) noon.


The fire originated from electric short-circuit at 12:40pm on the fourth floor of the building number 6 of water resource ministry, our correspondent reports.

However, the blaze was doused by the fire extinguishers within half an hour.

The people of the building got panicked and came to the ground.

There was no report of damage or casualty till filing this report.

Two people were killed in a post-poll violence in Sarail Sadar union of Brahmanbaria Sunday morning.

Anisuddin Thakur, 45, died on way to Sarail Upazila Health Complex while Nilu Miah, 28, was declared dead when he was taken to Sadar Hospital, reports our Brahmanbaria correspondent.

Ammo found in Sherpur again

Police recovered 367 rounds of bullets from Jhenaigati upazila of Sherpur Tuesday morning.

On information, a joint team of Sherpur Sadar and Jhenaigati police conducted a raid in Gazni area at about 6:30am.

They found two bags containing the ammunition used in Chinese rifle under a culvert, said Md Tamiz Uddin, officer-in-charge of Jhenaigati Police Station.

Sherpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Anisur Rahman led the drive, reports our Mymensingh correspondent.

Earlier on May 9, police seized 995 bullets from Bakakura village in Jhenaigati upazila.
