Facebook hit with unsolicited porn, violent videos

LOS ANGELES, Nov 16 (bdnews24.com/Reuters) – Facebook Inc said on Tuesday that it is investigating a rash of unsolicited graphic images that hit some users’ accounts this week.

The images, Internet links and videos depicting pornography and violence have hit some people’s Facebook newsfeeds in recent days.

“We experienced a coordinated spam attack that exploited a browser vulnerability,” Facebook spokesman Andrew Noyes said in a statement emailed to Reuters. “Our efforts have drastically limited the damage caused by this attack, and we are now in the process of investigating to identify those responsible.”

World Bank launches the Bangladesh Enterprise Survey 2011

DHAKA, May 12, 2011: The World Bank has launched the Bangladesh Enterprise Survey 2011 to assess the business environment for the Bangladeshi private sector and investment. The Survey is planned as an integral part of World Bank’s efforts to promote growth and investment in Bangladesh.

The survey would cover around 1,250 businesses in the manufacturing and services sector.  This will complement an ongoing World Bank business survey of 1,000 ready-made garment (RMG) firms in Bangladesh, to look at how locational choice affects productivity and competitiveness of firms.

Shock & Awe Talk:Of Insta-Democracy, ‘Revolution’ and doing a Cairo in Dhaka

“The revolution will not give your mouth sex appeal, the revolution will not make you look five pounds thinner, because the revolution will not be televised Brother, the revolution will be live.”   Gil Scott Heron

  • Whoever cooked up recipes for ‘revolutions’ in Tunisia and Egypt leading to the domino effect now sweeping the Arab world was surely ‘high’ on either instant-coffee, instant noodle or the variety of instant gratification applications, food and lifestyle devices that have become global icons! A reality check on strategies employed would infer, the only ‘weapons’ you need for a ‘revolution’ is a Facebook or Twitter account – (preferably both) a user friendly cell phone and human skills to mobilize thousands of people into a main square of your city.

SM for your business

I am more and more often asked the same question these days that I would like to answer here:

WHY SHOULD I USE SOCIAL MEDIA FOR MY BUSINESS* *various sources

Friend –
If you’re on Facebook, and you want to have a big impact right now on the election, here’s how:
Click here to use our “Commit to Vote Challenge” Facebook app.

With just a few clicks, you can ask any or all of your friends to commit to vote (which studies show is one of the best ways to get them to cast a ballot). You can track your progress, and compete with your friends who are also using the tool.
The amazing part is how quickly your actions multiply across the country. Let’s say five or 10 of your friends commit. A few of them will pass it on, and their friends will pass it on, and it just grows from there. We’re already seeing chains of commitments more than 20 people long, reaching from San Diego to Tampa, via Seattle, Boise, Boston, and New Orleans.
You might never guess how many people you’ll turn out, or what critical race you’ll put over the top — all with just a few minutes and your Facebook account.
So give it a shot:

New Changes in Store for Facebook Pages

Facebook has been rapidly advancing in the past year. After recently changing their messaging system, and launching a Profile redesign, today you will see new features to the Pages.

The new Facebook Pages layout is quite similar to the new Facebook Profiles. Facebook Pages have a nice layer of photos at the top of their page, as well as the navigation below their “profile photo”. Some new features are:

  • Left-hand information box below the profile photo is now removed
  • Page admins can now add their information about their brand directly below the main title

DHAKA (AFP) – Scores of dog lovers shouting “Don’t kill, sterilise” marched through Dhaka on Saturday to protest Bangladesh’s brutal canine culling, which involves breaking the animals’ necks.

Carrying banners with slogans, the protesters linked hands in front of the Dhaka City Corporation, the main government agency responsible for culling thousands of dogs every year.

Organisers, who arranged the protest using media such as Facebook and Twitter, said they believed it was the first time a public protest against the killing had been held in Bangladesh.

Thousands march in Tunisia, urge president to quit

TUNIS, Tunisia, Jan 14 (AP/UNB) – Thousands of angry demonstrators marched through Tunisia’s capital on Friday to demand the resignation of the country’s autocratic leader, and hundreds of foreign tourists were evacuated amid fears of more unrest.

Protesters chanted slogans against President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, including “Ben Ali, out!” and “Ben Ali, assassin!” One poster read “We won’t forget,” a reference to the rioters killed, many by police bullets.

Pent-up anger at unemployment and at a leadership many see as controlling and corrupt has exploded into protests and clashes with police over the past few weeks. The official death toll in the riots is 23, but opposition figures say dozens more have been killed.

Promoting your products and services through Statusbites

Since one of my key jobs is to find out how social media and user generated content can contribute to social change, we recently came up with a simple tactic which I call ‘statusbites’ to increase the circulation, frequency and visibility of status messages in social networks specific to any campaign, cause etc. Since the same principles can be applied to for-profit organisations as well, I thought to share the same for use by Bangladeshi managers who are contemplating how best to use social media for a variety of business objectives. Please note that increasingly consumers are getting to know about your products and services not from your official websites and TVCs but from the newsfeeds in their Facebook profiles through the fan pages and groups of companies they subscribe to. So an important mindshift needs to take place that rather than expecting consumers to travel to your websites to know more about you, you need to make sure that your message is travelling to where they are spending their times these days.

What are statusbites?
