Garment workers barricade Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, torch vehicles; 5 injured

Gazipur, Dec 13 (UNB)- Garment workers torched vehicles and blocked Dhaka-Mymensingh highway to press home their demands, including pay hike at Kunia Pachhor Targachh in Sadar upazila on Monday morning.

Police said 4,000 workers of Liz Apparels of Nasa group staged violent protest in factory at Kunia Pachhor Targachh area at 7am.

They torched several vehicles and ransacked machinery and ducuments of the factory before taking to streets at 8am.

The agitating workers put barricades on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway and torched 5 passing vehicles at 8am.

They withdrew road blockade at 11am after assurances made by factory owners and local administration that their demands will be considered.

Tens of thousands of garment workers Sunday clashed with law enforcers, damaged factories, torched vehicles and blockaded highways over the demand of increased wages as the country’s key apparel industrial belts were jolted in greater Dhaka. The mayhem injured nearly 100 people.

Owners termed the violence illogical and unexpected, saying that about 95 per cent of them have implemented the new wages, which, however, were strongly rejected by union leaders.

Hundreds of riot police personnel guarding the factories at Dhaka, Savar, Rupganj and Ashulia fired rubber bullets and tear gas shells and charged the demonstrators with baton to shove them away from the highways a day after the Korean Youngone company shut down all of its 17 units following wildcat protests.

RAB Arrests 9 Garment Workers

The Rapid Action Battalion have arrested nine garment workers on charges of causing violence in Mohakhali, Gulshan and Tejgaon areas on July 30 during protest against the new pay scale.

They were arrested on Thursday night from Mohakhali, Gulshan and Tejgaon areas, RAB-1 commanding officer Lt Col Rashidul Alam told a press briefing on Friday at the RRF Bhaban in Uttara.

The arrestees were Taher Hossain, 22, Ripon Hossain, 20, Rubel Mia, 20, Tapan Mia, 20, Idris Ali, 22, Sagor Hossain, 24, Bachchu Mia, 21, Rasel Mia, 19 and Akbar Hossain, 20.

Rampage again in Tejgaon area : 4000 RMG workers sued in N’ganj

Police yesterday night filed a case against 3,000 to 4,000 apparel workers naming 40 in connection with the recent unrest in Narayanganj demanding higher pay.

The case was filed with Fatullah Police Station accusing the workers demonstrating rejecting the new wage structure and demanded Tk 5,000 as their minimum monthly salary.

Police in a raid have so far arrested 11 workers from different places in Narayaganj. The arrestees were brought to Fatullah Police Station.

Police, however, cordoned Mahbubur Rahman Ismail, president of Bangladesh Textile Garment Workers Federation, near Narayanganj New Court area for his alleged involvement of creating unrest in the ready-made garment factories.

Rock-throwing garment workers staged demonstration and rampaged in Jamgora in Ashulia, and Naraynganj’s Fatulla areas and injured 150 people in protest at a government offer to raise their minimum wage that unions say is derisory.

Monowar Hossain assistant police commissioner said at least 100 factories remained shut at the garment hub of Ashulia, as hundreds of workers took to the streets armed with sticks and rocks.

The RMG workers also put barricades on EPZ-Abdullahpur road at about 9:00AM, bringing the traffic to a halt.

The RMG workers also put barricades on EPZ-Abdullahpur road at about 9:00 in the morning, bringing the traffic to a halt.

The angry workers demanded that the government fix the minimum monthly pay at Tk 5,000 with effect from August 1.

Witnesses said the workers of Polmol group at first took to the road to press home their demands. Later, the workers of other factories joined them.

Envoy, Starlink factories vandalized 300 workers, 25 cops injured at Savar, Fatullah as clashes escalate

At least 300 readymade garment workers and 25 police personnel were injured when the workers clashed with police at several points on EPZ-Abdullahpur road in Savar and on Dhaka-Narayanganj link road at Fatullah in Narayanganj yesterday, demanding cancellation of the newly announced pay scale.

The agitating workers demanded Tk 5,000 as minimum monthly wage and its implementation from August 1.

Witnesses said, at first the workers of Shed Session Garments Factory at Jamgara ransacked its valuables and took to the street. Later, thousands of workers from 20 garment factories, including Envoy Garments and Starlink Garments, from the area gathered there around 11:00 am and blocked the road, creating a huge traffic jam.

Govt won’t allow anarchy in RMG sector: PM



Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Saturday warned that the government will not tolerate any anarchy and destructive activities in the garment sector, reports UNB.

She said tough action would be taken against the people who are creating anarchic situation in the readymade garment (RMG) sector over the minimum wage.

The Prime Minister administered the caution while opening two BGMEA projects at the Bangabandhu Poverty Alleviation Complex at Tungipara through tele-conference from Ganobhaban.

PM’s Deputy Press Secretary Mahbubul Hoque Shakil briefed reporters on the tele-conference of the Prime Minister who cancelled her visit to Tungipara due to bad weather.

RMG protests enter 3rd day


Dhaka, Aug 1 (bdnews24.com) — Garment workers have taken to the streets for the third consecutive day, with hundreds of RMG workers laying siege to the Dhaka-Tangail Highway at Ashulia demanding a minimum wage of Tk 5,000.

Police officials report that over one thousand RMG workers came out on the roads at Jamgara in Ashulia bringing the traffic to a halt.

Clashes erupted in the Jamgara area when police tried to disperse the protesters off the streets.

Faced with another day of protests against the newly announced payscale, over 300 garment factories have closed down their operations for the day.

New pay scale rejected: 20 arrested RMG workers on rampage

Garment workers in the city’s different industrial belts staged demonstrations on Friday rejecting the just announced new pay scale of Tk 3,000 instead of demanded Tk 5,000.

The agitated hundreds of workers took to the streets in the morning and vandalised some banks and shopping malls at Gulshan, and damaged a number of vehicles at Tejgaon area. They also set on fire a private car and a motobike.

Amid the rampage, traffic from Satrasta to Mohakhali crossing road, Bijoy Sarani, Tejgaon Link Road, Gulshan Link Road and Gulshan circle-1 halted for several hours. The agitation continued from 8:30 am to around 12:45 pm.

Thousands of garment (RMG) workers Friday blockaded major city streets, vandalised dozens of factories and damaged a number of vehicles as they rejected the government’s latest wage structure for them, police said.

The angry workers demanded cancellation of the wage structure declared by the wage board and its increase to Taka 5,000 as minimum basic monthly salary.

Nearly 6,000 workers went berserk in the morning and damaged dozens of factories at Tejgaon Industrial Area putting barricades on Banani-Moghbazar and Mohakhali-Gulshan roads, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tejgaon Industrial Area police station Omar Faruk said.

Gazipur workers block highway over death rumour


Gazipur, July 30 (bdnews24.com) — Readymade garment workers vandalised around 10 vehicles on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway and blocked the busy road for around half an hour over a rumour of a co-worker’s death in a road accident.

Benu Akter alias ‘Fatema’, 30, a worker of Liz Apparels at Targachh in Gazipur, was injured seriously in the accident while coming back from work at around 10:15pm on Friday.

Serious gridlock hampered traffic on the road following the accident. Naozor highway police check-post’s sergeant Mostafizur Rahman said that a bus on its way to Gazipur hit Fatema who was crossing the road.

New pay structure effective from Nov 1 : Govt announces Tk 3,000 minimum monthly wage for RMG workers

The government yesterday formally announced a new monthly minimum wage for the workers of the readymade garment industries at Tk 3,000.

Labour and Employment Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain made the announcement at a press briefing at his ministry as the Minimum Wage Board handed over the new wage structure to the minister formally.

According to the submission, the minimum wage for apprentice workers will be at Tk 2,500.

The structure will be effective from November 1 after completion of legal procedures, the minister said.
