New women MPs to be named Thursday

Dhaka, Dec 7 (bdnews24.com) — The five candidates nominated by the ruling Awami League for the new reserved seats for women in parliament are going to be elected unchallenged.

The Election Commission will make an official announcement to this effect on Thursday.

Returning officer Mihir Sarwar Morshed told bdnews24.com that none of the five withdrew their nomination until 2pm Wednesday – the deadline for withdrawal. As per laws, the five candidates nominated by Awami League have been elected without contest, he said.

“We’ve some formalities. The commission will formally announce them elected on Thursday,” he added.

BNP demands release of Khokon

Dhaka, Nov 2 (bdnews24.com) — BNP has demanded release of its Narsingdi unit chief and central education secretary Khairul Kabir Khokon, held apparently in connection with the murder of Narsingdi mayor Lokman Hossain.

The main opposition made the demand at a press conference on Wednesday morning, hours after Khokon’s arrest.

Speaking at the press briefing, joint secretary-general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi also said the government was not informing them about Khokon’s whereabouts.

“Police picked up Khokon from his Khilgaon residence around 3am (on Wednesday). After that, we can’t get his whereabouts even after speaking with the state minister for home, Dhaka police commissioner and other high officials,” Rizvi said.

Transport Strike to save Murderer Jamir Hossain, Killer of Tareque Masud & Mishuk Munier.

The Bus Owners’ and Workers’ Unity Council has declared that they will enforce a transport strike on 41 routes of the North Western region of the country inorder to release the killer driver Jamir Hossain, who is alleged for murdering Tareque Masud and Mishuk Munier. Khulna Transport Workers Unity Council general secretary Sahadat Hossain Mridha told on Thursday, “Although bus movement has been suspended on 18 routes of Khulna, we will sit with the Jessore workers union at noon to take the final decision.”

Twin setbacks for AL

Dhaka, Oct 30 (bdnews24.com)— With its mayor pick Shamim Osman losing heavily and a tussle with the Election Commission, the ruling Awami League has suffered twin defeats in the Narayanganj City Corporation polls.

Selina Hayat Ivy, saying that she had the blessings of the party chief Sheikh Hasina in her bid for the mayor’s office, had virtually knocked Shamim out of the race even before the unofficial results of half the centres came out.

Shamim and Awami League’s renegade candidate Ivy were considered the main contenders for the city’s top post.

Ivy slams EC as no army from Friday morning

Narayanganj, Oct 28 (bdnews24.com) — Narayanganj mayor candidate Selina Hayat Ivy has slammed the Election Commission (EC) for not deploying the army from Friday morning.

Before heading out to campaign on Friday, she told reporters, “The Election Commission promised it would deploy the army from Friday morning to conduct the elections fairly. But they broke their promise.”

“The EC will be responsible if the elections flows any other way,” she said.

Ivy, an Awami League leader, said she will accept the result whatever it may be but added that the people will react against a ‘conspiracy,’ if there is any.

Local AL leader accused of backing Sutrapur land-grab bid

Dhaka , Sept 11 (bdnews24.com)—A local Awami League leader faces allegations of abetting a gang in their bid to illegally occupy property spread over 32 kathas of land from 11 families in Sutrapur, old Dhaka.

Locals allege Nizam Uddin, president of Awami League’s local chapter, sheltered the armed criminals who damaged an idol at a Shiva Temple and fired weapons into the air to spread fear and grab the land on Friday morning.

Pro-AL lawyers set terms for settlement

Dhaka, Aug 6 (bdnews24.com) — Pro-Awami League lawyers have said the pro-BNP lawyers indulging in scuffle during a hearing at the High Court on Tuesday will have to apologise if they want to settle the feud following the incident.

In response to an invitation from Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) general secretary Badruddoza Badal, 10 former general secretaries of the association met him on Saturday afternoon to settle the issue.

The 10 former SCBA general secretaries who attended the meeting are Zainul Abedin, Nurul Islam Sujon, S M Rezaul Karim, A M Aminuddin, S M Muneer, Saidur Rahman, Giasuddin, Momtaz Uddin Fakir, Mahbub Ali and Bashir Ahmed.

Kader Siddiqui meeting Khaleda

Dhaka, July 23 (bdnews24.com) — Krishak Sramik Janata League president Kader Siddiqui is in talks with BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.

BNP’s acting secretary-general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir welcomed Siddiqui, the party general secretary Haibur Rahman Talukder and other leaders to Khaleda’s Gulshan residence before the meeting started at 6pm on Saturday. Siddiqui’s wife Nasrin was also among them.

On Tuesday, a BNP delegation led by Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir met Siddiqui at his Mohammadpur residence.

Later, Siddiqui said he agreed to join talks with Khaleda on how to overcome the ‘current crisis of the country’.
