7 share market investors released

DHAKA: Seven capital market investors, who along with two others were picked up by police on Monday, were released on Tuesday.

Police set them free in the morning, said Ataullah Nayeem, international affairs secretary of ‘Bangladesh Capital Market Investors Unity Council’ who was also among the arrestees.

Earlier on Monday, the law enforcers arrested nine small investors while they were chanting slogans in the city’s Motijheel area in support of their hartal which was later called off.

They, however, released two of them the same day.

BNP protest rally today

DHAKA: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will stage a rally on Monday protesting the attack on Dhaka City Corporation’s (DCC) outgoing mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka.


The rally will also demand the release of approximately 100 BNP leaders and activists who were detained in different parts of the capital during yesterday’s hartal.

BNP’s Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the programme during a post-hartal press briefing at the party’s Naya Paltan central office on Sunday. He warned that the BNP will undertake non-stop agitation programmes to protest the government’s decision to split DCC into two parts.

BNP’s hartal in city Dec 4

DHAKA, NOV 30: The opposition BNP had announced day-long hartal in the capital on Sunday (December 4) protesting the government’s decision to split Dhaka City Corporation (DCC). The decision was taken in the emergency meeting of the party standing committee meeting chaired by BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Wednesday.

BNP calls day-long hartal in capital Sunday to protest DCC bill

DHAKA: The opposition BNP had called for a day-long hartal in the capital on Sunday (December 4) protesting the government’s decision to split Dhaka City Corporation (DCC).
The decision was taken in an emergency meeting of the BNP’s Standing Committee on Wednesday chaired by BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, party acting secretary general Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a press conference afterwards. Further details will be announced by Begum Zia on Thursday, they added.
The Awami League-led alliance government on Tuesday quickly passed a much-talked about bill in parliament incorporating provisions to split the Dhaka City Corporation )(DCC) into two separate entities.
The High Court on Wednesday issued a rule on a writ petition, filed by mayor and BNP leader Sadeque Hossain Khoka, asking the government to explain why the bill to split the DCC would not be declared illegal.

Jessore: A half-day hartal enforced in Jessore by district unit BNP passed off peacefully on Saturday.

The shutdown ended at 12:00noon without any untoward incident.

30 hurt, 5 held during hartal in N’ganj

Narayanganj: At least 30 people, including 10 policemen, were injured in a clash between pro-hartal activists and law enforcers in Fatulla of the district on the first day of 30-hour hartal on Sunday called by the alliance of 12 religion-based political parties.

The clash ensued when police obstructed a procession brought out by the hartal supporters  in the area.

Faruq assault: BNP MP filed case against 25 people

Dhaka: A case was filed against 25 people including Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of police Harun-UR-Rashid and Assistant Commissioner (AC) Biplob Sarker this morning (Sunday) protesting the police assault on BNP chief whip Joynal Abedin Faruq during hartal on July 6.


Ashrafuddin Nizam, Lawmaker of Lakshmipur-4, filed the case with the court of Metropolitan Magistrate AKM Azad this morning.

Nearly 50 held on last day of hartal

Dhaka, July 7 (bdnews24.com) — The second day of the 48-hour general strike called by BNP and its allies has ended with sporadic clashes between law enforcers and pro-hartal activists.

Over 50 opposition activists were arrested on Wednesday across the country.

According to reports, police arrested 20 hartal supporters in Rajshahi, eight in Sylhet, two in Chittagong, two in Khulna, seven in Noakhali, five in Bogra, two in Barguna and two in Satkhira.

Around 30 vehicles were reportedly vandalised in Barisal.

Pickets torched two buses in Gazipur and one in Dhaka.

BNP lawmakers stage sit-in

BNP lawmakers staged a sit-in at the east site of the parliament on Thursday demanding arrest and exemplary punishment of the policemen responsible for the attack on Opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farroque.

Meanwhile, police arrested a youth when he was trying to set a bus ablaze at Mirpur early Thursday, the second day of the 48-hour countrywide hartal called by BNP-led four-party alliance.

A total of 17 lawmakers including BNP joint secretary general Mahbubuddin Khokon started the sit-in programme at about 9:30am, which continued for one and a half hours.
