Free 4 Munshiganj canals from grabbers: HC
The High Court (HC) Monday ordered Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of Munshiganj to free the four canals of the district from grabbers. The HC also asked them to take action against them who are involved in grabbing the cannels and to submit a progress report on March 6.
An HC bench comprising AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik and Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim issued the order as six concerned had appeared before the court on Monday.
Earlier On January 19, the HC summoned Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, Assistant Director of Environment Department, Munshiganj and Mayor of Mirkadim municipality to appear before it to explain why they failed to recover the canals from the grabbers.

Former ambassadors, civil servants and a retired Supreme Court judge have rallied behind the call.
In the context of the recent developments in the army and its rare admission of a coup plot, they suggest that declassification of the old secret documents could do away with the general confusion among the citizens.
Tours get roads repaired: Quader
Satkhira, Jan 28 (bdnews24.com) – The communications minister says roads are being repaired in a hurry wherever he is to visit, which is why he is planning to tour the whole country.
“They repaired all the broken roads because I was coming,” Obaidul Quader told a rally on Saturday at Satkhira after inspecting repair work.
“So I plan to go wherever there are broken roads,” he said.
He added that the Roads Division had been asked to repair the roads across the country before next monsoon.

Bangladeshi doctor wins 1st Gates Foundation award for vaccine innovation
DHAKA: The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation today(Wednesday) announced the first Gates Vaccine Innovation Award with Bangladeshi doctor ASM Amjad Hossain being its recipient.
“The award recognizes the work of Dr ASM Amjad Hossain, a former district immunization and surveillance medical officer in Bangladesh, whose implementation of an innovative approach to routine immunization provided thousands of children with access to life-saving vaccines,” said a statement of the Seattle-based foundation.
Top UK official visits Dhaka Saturday
Dhaka, Jan 11 (bdnews24.com) – British secretary of state for international development Andrew Mitchell will come to Dhaka on Saturday on a four-day trip to visit DFID activities in Bangladesh.
This is his first visit to Bangladesh and he is scheduled to meet prime minister Sheikh Hasina, finance minister AMA Muhith and foreign minister Dipu Moni, and visit some Department for International Development (DFID) projects.
DFID, the largest bilateral donor for Bangladesh, will spend an average of £250 million per year in Bangladesh until 2015.
BNP pushes caretaker issue with President(Updated)
DHAKA: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) held talks with President Zillur Rahman Wednesday on the formation of the new Election Commission (EC) and proposed restoration of the caretaker government system.
During the hour-long dialogue which ended at about 12:00 noon, the main opposition party pushed its key demand for restoration of the caretaker government system in the constitution and holding the next general election under the system scrapped last year by the Awami League-led government, party sources later said.
“A free, fair and neutral election is not possible if it is held under a political government” BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a press briefing at BNP Naya Paltan Central office Wednesday noon.
Edible oil price hike decision Sunday
Dhaka, Jan 5 (bdnews24.com) — The Tariff Commission of Bangladesh (TCB) will hold a meeting on Sunday to fix the new maximum retail price of edible oil.
Although the commerce ministry officials sat with the traders and edible oil refinery owners on Thursday, the meeting failed to reach any decision.
After the meeting, commerce secretary Mohammad Golam Hossain told reporters that the traders and the mill owners are demanding hike in edible oil prices citing depreciation of taka against dollar as the reason.
Saying there is no reason to raise the prices now, Hossain said, “The TCB meeting will decide on the prices.”
Amini, 4 others face arrest warrant
Dhaka, Jan 2 (bdnews24.com) – A Dhaka court on Monday ordered arrests of Islami Oikya Jote faction leader Mufti Fazlul Haque Amini and four others for allegedly beating and threatening a madrasah student for his refusal to join demonstration three years ago.
Dhaka’s additional chief metropolitan magistrate Abu Zafar Mohammad Kamruzzaman also asked police to reinvestigate the case filed in 2008 with Lalbagh Police Station over the beating.
The others who faced the warrant are activists of the party Mohammad Raihan, Abul Khayer, Mohammad Sayeed and Zakir Hossain.
Chawkbazar Ashraful Ulum Madrasah student Hafez Mohammad Sharif Hossain filed the case on May 16, 2008.
Mozena all praise for presidential dialogue
Dhaka, Dec 27 – The US ambassador to Bangladesh thinks the president’s dialogue with political parties on the new Election Commission is a positive move.
After inauguration of the container terminal management system (CTMS) and the radiation detection system at the Chittagong Port on Tuesday, ambassador Dan Mozena told reporters: “Dialogue with all parties is positive and all parties participating in it is also positive.”
On Dec 22, president Zillur Rahman started talks with parties represented in parliament on formation of a new Election Commission, since the term all commissioners in the present EC will end by Feb 13.
