BNP to revive all withdrawn political cases: MK Anwar

Dhaka, Feb 1 (bdnews24.com)— BNP will revive all the cases withdrawn during the tenure of Awami League-led incumbent government, the party’s standing committee member M K Anwar said on Wednesday.

“The incumbent government has so far withdrawn 7,131 cases against themselves. None of the withdrawn cases were against the opposition parties. Fifteen corruption cases against prime minister Sheikh Hasina were withdrawn. When we come to power, those cases will be revived and tried quickly,” he said at a discussion at the National Press Club.

According to reports, the home ministry withdrew more than 7,000 political cases filed against Awami League leaders and supporters, filed during the past military-backed caretaker government.

‘AL has history of hailing coups’

Khaleda blasts ban on mass procession

DHAKA, Jan 28: Leader of the opposition and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Saturday urged the government to withdraw the ban imposed by the DMP on holding procession and rallies in the city.
She warned that the consequence of foiling opposition’s democratic movement through conspiracy and repression would not be good.

Govt spinning tales: BNP

Dhaka, Jan 21 (bdnews24.com) – BNP has alleged the government of concocting stories and manufacturing incidents to destroy democracy.

The main opposition’s spokesman made the statement a day after prime minister Sheikh Hasina accused the “desperate” opposition of “plotting” against her government after the army foiled a coup plot by some “fanatic” officers, both serving and retired.

BNP’s acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told a discussion at the Diploma Engineers’ Institute auditorium at Kakrail on Saturday that Bangladesh was going through a critical phase and urged the people to be alert.

Plunderers of orphans’ money, will face trial, says Hasina

MANIKGANJ, Jan 18: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said that those who grabbed orphans’ money would not be spared, they must face trial.
“Those who have plundered orphans money must face the trial,” the prime minister said pointing to opposition leader Khaleda Zia who was formally charged with embezzlement of Zia Orphanage Trust fund during her 2001-2006 tenure.

Khaleda submits bail bond

DHAKA, JAN 17: The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka on Tuesday granted BNP Chief Khaleda Zia permission to submit bail bond upon a Tk 5000 bond and two guarantors.

Metropolitan Magistrate Shamima Perveen of the CMM Court asked Khaleda Zia to submit her bail bond after she appeared before the crowded courtroom on Tuesday 12.40 pm.

Khaleda indicted in Zia Trust fund graft

DHAKA, JAN 16: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Monday pressed charges against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and three others for abusing power in setting up a charitable trust  after her husband late president Ziaur Rahman.
Harunur Rashid, an assistant director of ACC, who is investigating the case, submitted the charge sheet before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Monday afternoon.

BNP pushes caretaker issue with President(Updated)

DHAKA: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) held talks with President Zillur Rahman Wednesday on the formation of the new Election Commission (EC) and proposed restoration of the caretaker government system.


During the hour-long dialogue which ended at about 12:00 noon, the main opposition party pushed its key demand for restoration of the caretaker government system in the constitution and holding the next general election under the system scrapped last year by the Awami League-led government, party  sources later said.

“A free, fair and neutral election is not possible if it is held under a political government” BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a press briefing at BNP Naya Paltan Central office Wednesday noon.

‘Poll without CG to be a mistake’

DHAKA, JAN 8: BNP chairperson and leader of the opposition Khaleda Zia on Sunday warned that governments attempt to hold next general elections under it instead of the caretaker government would be a grave mistake.
Addressing different meetings on way to Chittagong during four-party alliance’s road march programme, the former prime minister urged the people to resist any such attempt of the government and said that the popularity of the ruling party had dipped so low that it would not be able to return to power even after 41 years.

BNP activists streaming into Ctg rally ground

Chittagong, Jan 9 (bdnews24.com) — BNP supporters have started gathering on the Polo Ground, decorated with digital banners and signs, for a rally where chairperson Khaleda Zia is likely to announce fresh anti-government protest plans.

She is scheduled to address the rally at 2pm.

Chittagong mayor M Manzur Alam had greeted her with flowers when she had arrived in the port city with road march on Sunday night.

Starting for Chittagong on Sunday morning, she had addressed three street rallies in Comilla and Feni.

Khaleda said that Awami League would make a ‘big mistake’ if it oversees the next general election.

BNP standing committee meet Satday night

Dhaka, Jan 7 (bdnews24.com) — BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will hold a meeting of the party’s highest policy-making body, National Standing Committee, on Saturday night to finalise new plans for anti-government movement.

“Committee members will sit with her at her Gulshan office on Saturday night,” joint secretary-general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told bdnews24.com.

He said that the party is scheduled to hold their fourth road march to Chittagong on Sunday. “Khaleda Zia will spell out new plans on Monday for the party’s anti-government movement at a rally in Chittagong’s Pologround field.”

“The meeting of the standing committee will discuss the issue,” Rizvi said.

No graft found against Khaleda in Bhairab bridge project

DHAKA: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Tuesday said it has found no evidence of corruption against former prime minister Khaleda Zia in the construction of the Bhairab bridge.
