6 of a family among 7 killed in Habiganj road crash

HABIGANJ: Seven people, including six of a family, were killed in a head between a microbus and a BRTC bus on Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Nabiganj upazila of the district Tuesday night.
The victims Abdul Motin, his mother-in-law Amina Khatun, daughters Parveen Akhter and Yasmin Akhter, Parveen’s husband Alai Miah, close relative Mohammad Firoj and driver Abul Kalam were residents of Joypur village.
Highway police and witnesses said the accident took place Tuesday night when the microbus of Abdul Motin collided with a BRTC bus at Fhultoli Bazar of the upazila, leaving five people dead on the spot and 10 passengers of the bus injured.
Charges against Mojahid taken into cognizance
Dhaka, Jan 26: The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Thursday took 1971 war crimes charges against Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojahid into cognizance.
Boy found dead on mosque stairs
Munsiganj, Jan 21 (bdnews24.com) – A seven-year-old boy was found dead on the staircase of a mosque at Sadar upazila in the district after he went missing on Saturday morning.
The police believe the boy, Mohammad Alvi, was strangulated.
Incidentally, Alvi’s death comes less than six months of his elder brother’s murder.
Officer-in-charge of Sadar police station Abul Bashar told bdnews24.com that Alvi’s body was found on the stairs of Firingi Bazaar Patipara Jame Mosque of the upazila on Saturday noon.
Alvi was the younger son of Jiban Chowdhury, a businessman of Firingi Bazaar.
5 Hizb ut-Tahrir members held
DHAKA: Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested five members of Hizb ut-Tahrir from the city on Friday, a day after the army said it had foiled a coup plotted by Maj Syed Mohammad Ziaul Huq, said to have links with the banned Islamist outfit.
A RAB detective was injured during the arrests at Road-8, Sector–6 of Uttara after the Jum’a prayers, Maj Ahsan of RAB–1 told bdnews24.com.
He, however, could not immediately name the injured RAB member or the detainees.

Formal charges deadline reset to Dec 11
Dhaka, Dec 5 (bdnews24.com)—The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has deferred the deadline to Dec 11 for the prosecution to submit formal charges against four top leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami.
The Tribunal, which is hearing the charges of crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971, set the new date when chief prosecutor Ghulam Arieff Tipu on Monday sought time to present the charges, saying ‘some’ work was yet to be done.
The original deadline ended on Monday.
Jamaat chief Matiur Rahman Nizami, secretary-general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed and assistant secretaries-general Mohammad Kamaruzzaman and Abdul Quader Molla were produced before the court.

Khoka detained after clash with police
Dhaka, Dec 4 (bdnews24.com)—A senior DMP official has claimed that former Dhaka mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, who was detained in old Dhaka’s court area, has not been arrested.
“He was taken into police custody for his own safety,” assistant deputy commissioner of Lalbagh zone Mohammad Kamruzzaman told bdnews24.com on Sunday.
Khoka, also a vice-president of BNP, was detained after he allegedly led party supporters in a clash with the law enforcers in a pro-shutdown procession.
Police detained the former mayor around 12.15am from the court building, where he took shelter during the clash, he added.

Court summons Dhaka DC, ADC
Dhaka, Nov 29 (bdnews24.com) – A Dhaka court has summoned the Dhaka deputy commissioner (DC) for hearing an appeal against the verdict of a mobile court beyond his jurisdiction.
Besides DC Mohibul Haque, the court also summoned additional DC (acquisition) Zillur Rahman Chowdhury on Tuesday.
Judge Mohammad Aktharuzzaman of the Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court ordered them to appear at 10.30 am Wednesday.
Mohammad Ashraf Khan, a court police officer, told bdnews24.com that the court had summoned the senior officials for violating the Mobile Court Act by holding a hearing on an appeal against a mobile court verdict.
Ban Ki-moon leaves Dhaka
Dhaka, Nov 16 (bdnews24.com)— UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon has left Dhaka after a three-day official visit to Bangladesh.
He left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for Thailand around 8.50am on Wednesday, the foreign affairs ministry’s external publicity wing director general Mohammad Shamim Ahsan told bdnews24.com.
Ban is scheduled to visit the flood-affected areas of Thailand and meet the country’s prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra.
The final leg of his trip would take him to Indonesia where he would visit a community health centre and meet representatives of communities affected by deforestation in the central Kalimantan province on the island of Borneo.
