At least 30 people have been infected with suspected anthrax in two new districts — Kushtia and Tangail, the health officials of the districts confirmed.

Of them, 16 were found infected in Kushtia while the remaining 14 in Tangail.

The disease was identified in Sirajganj on August 20 and it spread out into its neighbouring district Pabna on August 22.

So far a total of 127 people have been infected with anthrax in Sirajganj and Pabna.

Youth’s body recovered in Keraniganj


Dhaka, Sep 1 (bdnews24.com) – The police have recovered the slaughtered body of a 22-year old youth with both the hands and legs tied.

“The body was recovered around 11am on Wednesday from a ditch in Zianagar Kabutarpara area,” South Keraniganj sub-inspector Mohammad Humayun Kabir told bdnews24.com.

The deceased was wearing black trousers and a half-sleeve chequered shirt, he added.

The body was sent to Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Police speculate the victim’s body was disposed in the ditch after being slaughtered on Tuesday night.

Bashundhara chairman Shah Alam granted bail in four cases


Dhaka, Aug 22 (bdnews24.com) — Bashundhara Group chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan alias Shah Alam was granted bail in four cases for usurping government land after he surrendered before a Dhaka court on Sunday.

The Bashundhara chairman sought bail after surrendering to Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s court at around 10.30am, his lawyer Roknuzzaman Prince confirmed bdnews24.com.

Metropolitan magistrates Shahadat Hossain, Rashed Kabir and Dilara Alo Chandana granted the bails after separate hearings, he added.

The cases were filed by Kazi Sarwar Hossain, Hazera Parvin, Gazi Obaidul Kabir and M A Malek in 2007.

Market monitoring teams realize fines worth Tk 95,000

Dhaka, Aug 19 (UNB) – Market monitoring teams in separate drives on Thursday realized Tk 95,000 in penalties from traders charging excessive prices for commodities.

Three market monitoring teams of the Commerce Ministry conducted the drives in city’s Khilgaon Bazar, Mohakhali Kitchen Market and Gulsan-1 kitchen market and realized the money from 14 traders for violating the Consumers Rights Protection Act 2009.

Three deputy secretaries of the Commerce Ministry, Sahidul Islam, M Enamul Huque Ana and Mohammad Abul Kalam, led the drives while Dhaka district magistrates and members of law enforcing agencies including RAB assisted the drives.
