Islamic banks asked to invest surplus funds

Dhaka, Nov 20: A parliamentary standing committee on Sunday asked Islamic banks to invest excess liquidity in infrastructure development by forming a mutual fund.        
According to Bangladesh Bank (BB) statistics, the total surplus held at Islamic banks stands at around Tk 4,683 crore.

DHAKA (AFP) – Bangladesh will create a $700 million mutual fund, the country’s biggest ever, in a bid to stabilise the highly volatile Dhaka stock exchange, the head of a state-owned investment bank has said.

The plan is part of the government’s drive to restore calm to the market, whose sharp fall has triggered angry protests by investors in the capital Dhaka and cities and towns across the country.

Eight state-run financial institutions will invest cash to create the planned 50 billion taka ($700 million) Bangladesh Fund, said M.

DSE’s new year first session ends on positive note

Dhaka stocks began Sunday the year’s maiden session on an upbeat note as all three indices moved up slightly higher.

Although the market gained more than 60 points till the mid-day session, it plunged later of the day after investors started booking profits on banking and mutual funds issues, thus wiping out early gains to close only 14 points up.

The benchmark DSE General Index (DGEN), the main yardstick of the market, ended with 14.18 points or 0.17 per cent.

ICB to launch two Tk 10b mutual funds

State-owned Investment Corporation of Bangladesh (ICB) is set to launch two mutual funds of Tk10 billion, which would be the biggest ever mutual fund in the history of country’s capital market.

The mutual funds– ICB Multi-Sectoral Mutual Fund Scheme-1 and ICB NRB-Energy Sectoral Mutual Fund Scheme-1, would be of Tk5.0 billion each.

ICB Asset Management Company Ltd ( IAMCL), a subsidiary of the ICB, has been appointed as issue manager of both the two proposed funds, while state-owned Agrani Bank Ltd will act as the custodian and trustee of these two giant mutual funds.

HC declares SEC’s rejection of AIMS rights, bonus offer illegal

The High Court (HC) has declared illegal the securities regulator’s decision to reject the rights and bonus offers of AIMS First Mutual Fund.

A HC division bench comprising Justice Mamnoon Rahman and Justice Syeda Afsar Jahan Tuesday gave this verdict.

The HC also ordered the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to take the decision on the dividend offers of AIMS within 10 days only after it gets the certified copy of the verdict, the regulator’s lawyer Probir Neogi said.

“The court asked us to take the decision on the dividend offer of AIMS showing the clear rationale,” Mr. Neogi told the FE.

Mutual funds shine following HC verdict

Share prices on the main bourse increased for the ninth straight session Tuesday with the benchmark index passing 7300-mark for the first time, driven by banks and mutual funds.

Mutual funds sector shined on the day after news that the High Court (HC) declared Tuesday illegal the SEC rejection of bonus and rights declared by AIMS First Mutual Fund.

An HC bench also asked the market regulator to take action in the light of the verdict within 10 days.

AIMS First Mutual Fund was the top gainer with a rise of 19.97 per cent when the news hit in the market during trading hour.

SEC approves rights shares for two banks



Dhaka, Jul 20 (bdnews24.com)—The Securities and Exchange Commission has approved the issuance of rights shares of City Bank and Islamic Finance and Investment Ltd, an official said.

“The decision came from a commission meeting held on Tuesday,” SEC executive director Anwarul Kabir Bhuiyan told a press briefing.

City Bank has been allowed to issue one right share against one existing share while Islamic Finance & Investment will be able to issue one right share for two existing shares.

According to City Bank’s rights offer, it will issue 19.62 million ordinary shares with an issue price of Tk 200 each, which includes a premium of Tk 100.
