50 injured in clash over recruitment in RMCH
Rangpur, Jan 28: At least 50 people, including a local member of parliament and some journalists, were injured on Saturday in a clash between the Jatiya Party activists and the medical college employees.
Altaf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Rangpur Police Station, said the clash erupted at around 1.00 pm when Asif Sahariar MP, also nephew of Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad, along with several hundred activists, approached the director of the Rangpur Medical College Hospital to provide jobs to some of his party men in the institution.
Boy found dead on mosque stairs
Munsiganj, Jan 21 (bdnews24.com) – A seven-year-old boy was found dead on the staircase of a mosque at Sadar upazila in the district after he went missing on Saturday morning.
The police believe the boy, Mohammad Alvi, was strangulated.
Incidentally, Alvi’s death comes less than six months of his elder brother’s murder.
Officer-in-charge of Sadar police station Abul Bashar told bdnews24.com that Alvi’s body was found on the stairs of Firingi Bazaar Patipara Jame Mosque of the upazila on Saturday noon.
Alvi was the younger son of Jiban Chowdhury, a businessman of Firingi Bazaar.
Mirpur MP ‘manhandles’ journalist
Dhaka, Jan 3 (bdnews24.com) – Ruling Awami League MP Kamal Ahmed Majumder allegedly beat up a journalist at Monipur High School in the city’s Mirpur on Tuesday.
Private TV channel RTV said Majumder attacked their staff reporter Aparna Singha who went to the school in the morning to make a report on an allegation of charging extra fees for admission.
The MP, however, denied the allegation saying he ‘only pushed aside’ the reporter.
Guardians of Monipur High School students had been protesting against a decision to charge Tk 20,000 for development fees beside the government-fixed Tk 5,000 admission fees, RTV joint news editor Aktar Hossain said.
Amini, 4 others face arrest warrant
Dhaka, Jan 2 (bdnews24.com) – A Dhaka court on Monday ordered arrests of Islami Oikya Jote faction leader Mufti Fazlul Haque Amini and four others for allegedly beating and threatening a madrasah student for his refusal to join demonstration three years ago.
Dhaka’s additional chief metropolitan magistrate Abu Zafar Mohammad Kamruzzaman also asked police to reinvestigate the case filed in 2008 with Lalbagh Police Station over the beating.
The others who faced the warrant are activists of the party Mohammad Raihan, Abul Khayer, Mohammad Sayeed and Zakir Hossain.
Chawkbazar Ashraful Ulum Madrasah student Hafez Mohammad Sharif Hossain filed the case on May 16, 2008.
7 dead in Noakhali road crash
Noakhali, Jan 1 (bdnews24.com) — A car skidded off the road before falling into a ditch, leaving at least seven people including two children dead early Sunday in the district.
The accident took place at Naotala on Sonaimuri-Laksham road, Sonaimuri Police Station officer-in-charge Humayun Kabir told bdnews24.com.
The car was on its way to Noakhali from Dhaka, he said.
Five of the deceased have been identified as businessman Mostafa Mia from Dhaka’s Uttara, his daughters ‘Sohagi’ and ‘Sraboni’, his grandson ‘Sadaf’ and his brother-in-law’s daughter ‘Mili’.
One of the two others could be the driver.
Explosion kills pedestrian
Gas Balloon Cylinder
A pedestrian died in a gas cylinder explosion at Sipahipara of Munshiganj Sadar upazila yesterday evening.
The dead is Ramiz Sheikh, 55, of Maligaon village in Sadar upazila.
The cylinder of helium balloon gas exploded with a bang and splintered at the parking of DTL Bus Company, witnesses said.
Hit by some splinters, Ramiz died on the spot. He was returning home after visiting his daughter at Hatimara village in the same upazila.
Police recovered the body and sent it to Munshiganj General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Forkan missing after alleging ‘RAB torture’
Dhaka, Nov 21 (bdnews24.com)—A youth from Jhalakathi’s Indrapasha has been missing for one and a half years, since after he had narrated to journalists tortures he had allegedly faced in the custody of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
The family has no clues about the whereabouts of Mohammad Forkan but suspects that the elite crime-busting unit might have a hand behind the disappearance of the 26-year-old who used to hawk on footpaths.
The law enforcers, however, have categorically denied involvement.
SI suspended over 8-yr-old’s torture
Chittagong/Pabna, Nov 13 (bdnews24.com)—Authorities have suspended Sitakunda police sub-inspector Shahed Ali, pending investigation, for allegedly torturing his 8-year-old domestic help Romela Khatun.
Sitakunda police OC Noor Mohammad said on Sunday the suspension came following a government order after a case was recorded in line with a complaint filed with Santhia police in Pabna district the day before.
Riaz Uddin, Romela’s father, filed the case against ‘Shahed’ of Sitakunda Police Station and his wife Sweetie Begum.
All of them are residents of Nandiara in Santhia upazila of Pabna district.
2 drown in Munshiganj quicksand
Two friends died after sinking into a quicksand in a shoal of the river Padma in Munshiganj Friday afternoon. Hailing from the capital’s old part, Rafiqul Islam Rocky, 21, and Faizul Islam, 20, and their friends went to the shoal in Mawa to spend the weekend.
When they were playing football in the shoal, three including Rocky and Faizul got stuck in the quicksand, reports our correspondent in Munshiganj.
Local fishermen rescued the three immediately and rushed them to Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared Rocky and Faizul dead, said Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sreenagar Police Station.
40 hurt in Munshiganj clash
At least 40 people were injured including 15 by bullets in a gunfight between two groups of people in Tongibari upazila of Munshiganj Wednesday morning.
The injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and Munshiganj General Hospital, reports our Munshiganj correspondent.
The clash ensued around 9:00am between supporters of Noor Mohammad, chairman of Kathadia-Shimulia Union Parisad (UP), and Shamsuddin Miah, a member of Ward No-6 of the union, over sharing the money collected from the local cattle markets, said Kazi Daud Hossain, officer-in-charge of Tongibari Police Station.

Youth’s body recovered
PABNA: Police recovered the body of an unidentified youth, aged about 28, from Ataikula area in Pabna district on Wednesday Ataikula police station officer-in-charge Rabiul Hassan said locals found the body and informed the police
Body recovered
Police yesterday recovered body of an unidentified man, aged about 50, from the ground floor of a clinic at Ichhapur bazaar under Sirajdikhan upazila of the district. Locals informed the police when they saw the body at Popular Clinic around 11:00am. Later, police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy. Mahabubur Rahman, officer in-charge of Sirajdikhan police station said the reason behind the man’s death could not be ascertained immediately. However, locals identified the deceased as a beggar, he added.
