Crack on Meghna bridge, ferry service to start on Feb 9

DHAKA: Communications minister Obaidul Quader announced here Wednesday that due to crack on the Maghna Bridge on Dhaka-Chittagong highway, the authorities have decided to suspend traffic on the bridge and introduce ferry service on the Meghna river from February 9.

In tears, he recalls wife, daughter’s torture in ’71

Dhaka, Jan 29 (bdnews24.com) — Giving testimony lying down on a hospital bed, the prosecution’s 23rd witness against Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee could not hold back his tears on Wednesday, remembering his long-lost wife and daughter soon after the 1971 Liberation War.

Octogenarian Madhusudan Gharami told the war crimes tribunal that Razakars, a notorious band of collaborators during the war, had attacked his house and raped his wife.

The International Crimes Tribunal has indicted the Jamaat-e-Islami executive council member on 20 counts of crimes, including murder, rape, arson and loot.

ICT rejects Sayedee, Quader Mollah’s pleas seeking investigation report

DHAKA: The International Crimes Tribunal on Sunday rejected two petitions filed by Jamaat-e-Islami leaders Delawar Hossain Sayedee and Abdul Quader Mollah seeking copies of investigation reports on their alleged crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

Edible oil price hike decision Sunday

Dhaka, Jan 5 (bdnews24.com) — The Tariff Commission of Bangladesh (TCB) will hold a meeting on Sunday to fix the new maximum retail price of edible oil.

Although the commerce ministry officials sat with the traders and edible oil refinery owners on Thursday, the meeting failed to reach any decision.

After the meeting, commerce secretary Mohammad Golam Hossain told reporters that the traders and the mill owners are demanding hike in edible oil prices citing depreciation of taka against dollar as the reason.

Saying there is no reason to raise the prices now, Hossain said, “The TCB meeting will decide on the prices.”

Sayedee helped Pak army: witness

Dhaka, Jan 2 (bdnews24.com) — Witness Mohammad Mostofa Hawlader said on Monday Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee helped the Pakistani army target the Hindu community as they launched their brutal attack on them in Pirojpur district in 1971.

Hawlader made the comment as he was being cross-examined by defence counsels for a second day Monday before the International Crimes Tribunal.

In response to queries by Sayedee’s lawyer Mizanul Islam, Hawlader said the Pakistani military began their crackdown and unleashed arson attacks on the Hindu people in the southern district with the help of Sayedee and his supporters.

Charges against Mojaheed, Kamaruzzaman returned, Quader Molla’s charges taken into cognisance

DHAKA: The International Crimes Tribunal Wednesday returned the charges against Jamaat-e-Islami leaders Ali Ahsun Mohammad Mojaheed and Muhammad Kamaruzzaman to the prosecution, complaining that the charges were not well prepared and presented properly.

Goldstein to discuss Padma project in US

Dhaka, Dec 7 (bdnews24.com) – The World Bank country director to Bangladesh has met new communications minister Obaidul Quader on the first day of his joining office.

Ellen Goldstein paid the courtesy visit to Quader at his Secretariat office on Wednesday.

After the half-hour meeting, Bridges Division secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam told reporters that the World Bank was positively looking into the issue of approving the fund for Padma Bridge construction project.

Islam said that they talked about different aspects of the Padma bridge project.

Formal charges deadline reset to Dec 11

Dhaka, Dec 5 (bdnews24.com)—The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has deferred the deadline to Dec 11 for the prosecution to submit formal charges against four top leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami.

The Tribunal, which is hearing the charges of crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971, set the new date when chief prosecutor Ghulam Arieff Tipu on Monday sought time to present the charges, saying ‘some’ work was yet to be done.

The original deadline ended on Monday.

Jamaat chief Matiur Rahman Nizami, secretary-general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed and assistant secretaries-general Mohammad Kamaruzzaman and Abdul Quader Molla were produced before the court.

Abul Hossain moved to ICT

Obaidul Quader got the communications ministry, Suranjit Sengupta railways and state minister Yeafesh Osman was given the charge in the newly-carved science and technology ministry.

AL names 5 for reserved seats

Dhaka, Nov 27 (bdnews24.com) —A career journalist, a government law officer and three tested political activists have been named by the Awami League for the Dec 26 election to five reserved seats for women in parliament.

Their membership in parliament is almost certain as the ruling party has already been guaranteed the new seats in line with the amended constitution.

Dhaka, Oct 2: The investigation agency for the International Crimes Tribunal on Sunday claimed that primary evidence has been found concerning BNP leader Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury’s involvement in 32 crimes against humanity.
