Blame all but WASA for water crisis
Dhaka, Aug 2 (bdnews24.com) — Promises are made to be broken, they say, and the Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) seems hell-bent on justifying the cliché.
Despite high-sounding claims made by the authorities in the very recent past, the capital has been experiencing an acute crisis of water.
And WASA blames power cuts and a fall in the subterranean water levels for the crisis, as if they were unusual phenomena for this time of the year.
WASA managing director Taksim A Khan told bdnews24.com households wasting water were also partly to blame.
Ramadan begins Tuesday
Dhaka: The holy Ramadan, a special month for Muslims to re-evaluate their lives in light of Islamic guidance, begins on Tuesday as a crescent moon has been sighted in Bangladesh.

Dhaka: The education ministry has declared Eid-ul-Fitr and Ramadan vacations for high schools from Aug 4 to Sept 7 and colleges from Aug 16 to Sept 7.
New time-table for govt offices during Ramadan
Dhaka: The cabinet Tuesday fixed the timing for government offices during the holy month of Ramadan.
The new timing has been fixed at the weekly cabinet meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

The prices of major daily consumables have been rising for the last few weeks. The increase comes in contrast to a relatively stable price situation during the last holy month of Ramadan.
A leading Bengali daily quoting statistics compiled by the state-run Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has reported that the price of main staple of the country’s population-rice- recorded a 44 per cent rise over a period of last one year while the increase in the case of flour (atta) was 52 per cent. During the same period, Soyabean oil prices increased by 18 per cent and palm oil 35 per cent.
JS body recommends policy formulation for MLM business
The body on Commerce Ministry in its 16th meeting held at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban discussed the policy for the MLM business in details as there is no specific policy in the country.
Chairman of the body Advocate Lutful Hai presided over the meeting addressed, among others, by committee member and Commerce Minister Faruk Khan, Tahura Ali, M Abul Kashem, Rumana Mahmud and Sheikh Afil Uddin.
Govt extends tax return deadline to Oct 7
Dhaka, Sep 30 (bdnews24.com) — The government has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns to Oct 7.
Syed A Mumen, public relations officer of the National Board of Revenue, told bdnews24.com that the decision was taken in order to facilitate return submission of individual income tax payers.
According to the Income Tax Order, individual taxpayers can file returns all through the month of September. However, the deadline is extended every time near the end of the month. Last year, the deadline was extended by one month.
FBCCI for extending tax return submission date till Oct 31
Acting president of FBCCI M Jasim Uddin made the appeal saying that most of the individual taxpayers are not being able to submit their returns by the September 30 deadline due to the holy Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr.
The FBCCI, in a release, however, thanked the government for taking different initiatives to increase the tax-GDP ratio. They also congratulated the National Board of Revenue (NBR) for successfully observing the Income Tax Day on Sept 15.

Weekly Tea Sale sees strong demand despite large offerings
Chittagong, Sept 6 (UNB) – The weekly tea sale – the last of Ramadan – despite large offerings on Tuesday witnessed a strong demand with teas being well absorbed at firm rates.
According to a market report, Blenders were competing strongly whilst there was fair interest from the Loose Tea buyers. Dusts were a good market.
CTC LEAF: 24,825 packages and 285 packages of Old Season on offer met with a fairly strong demand at slightly easier rates.
CNG Stations Closed for 6 hrs Everyday
CNG filling stations across the country will remain closed for six hours everyday, from 3–9 pm, until further notice in an attempt to increase gas supply to the power stations.
Hossain Mansur Ahmed, chairman of the state-run gas agency Petrobangla, told bdnews24.com “This decision will be executed from Monday to increase gas supply to the power stations and to ensure sufficient gas supply to residences.”
Petrobangla has taken the decision following an energy ministry order on Thursday, he added.
Gas supply to the Karnaphuli Fertiliser Company Ltd. (KAFCO) has also recently been halted for the same reason, he said.
Ramadan begins Thursday

The holy Ramadan, the lunar month of self-purification through fasting and abstinence, begins on Thursday as the new moon was sighted in Bangladesh sky on Wednesday.
4:08am is the last minute of the 1st Sehri (the meal before Dawn), while 6:38pm for Iftar.
The National Moon Sighting Committee took the decision in a meeting held at the Islamic Foundation on Wednesday night after reviewing reports on moon sighting for the holy month of Ramadan.
State Minister for Religious Affairs and Chairman of the committee Advocate Mohammad Shahjahan Mia presided over the meeting.
