BNP rejects president’s proposal on EC search committe

DHAKA: The acting secretary general of BNP, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, on Sunday rejected the president’s reported proposition to form an ‘Election Commission (EC) Search Committee’ as an outcome of the recent dialogue with political parties.


Fakhrul said this in a press conference at BNP’s party office at Paltan in the capital this morning.

Terming the recent Bangabhaban dialogue as a “pre-staged drama,” the BNP leader claimed that in the name of the dialogue the image of the president had been made controversial.

Fakhrul also called upon the people from all walks of life to make BNP’s planned January 29 mass procession a success.

BNP sticks to caretakers-first gun

Dhaka, Jan 11 (bdnews24.com)—BNP told president Zillur Rahman on Wednesday that it will not accept formation of new Election Commission before the caretaker government provision is reinstated.

Its spokesperson Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir briefed the media at the party’s Naya Paltan headquarters about the details of the hour-long talks with president Zillur Rahman earlier in the day.

“We’ve told the president that formation of the Election Commission before a decision on revival of caretaker government system is not acceptable,” acting secretary-general Mirza Fakhrul said in the briefing.

BNP standing committee meet Satday night

Dhaka, Jan 7 (bdnews24.com) — BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will hold a meeting of the party’s highest policy-making body, National Standing Committee, on Saturday night to finalise new plans for anti-government movement.

“Committee members will sit with her at her Gulshan office on Saturday night,” joint secretary-general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told bdnews24.com.

He said that the party is scheduled to hold their fourth road march to Chittagong on Sunday. “Khaleda Zia will spell out new plans on Monday for the party’s anti-government movement at a rally in Chittagong’s Pologround field.”

“The meeting of the standing committee will discuss the issue,” Rizvi said.

BNP calls day-long hartal in capital Sunday to protest DCC bill

DHAKA: The opposition BNP had called for a day-long hartal in the capital on Sunday (December 4) protesting the government’s decision to split Dhaka City Corporation (DCC).
The decision was taken in an emergency meeting of the BNP’s Standing Committee on Wednesday chaired by BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, party acting secretary general Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a press conference afterwards. Further details will be announced by Begum Zia on Thursday, they added.
The Awami League-led alliance government on Tuesday quickly passed a much-talked about bill in parliament incorporating provisions to split the Dhaka City Corporation )(DCC) into two separate entities.
The High Court on Wednesday issued a rule on a writ petition, filed by mayor and BNP leader Sadeque Hossain Khoka, asking the government to explain why the bill to split the DCC would not be declared illegal.
