Kamal Mujumder ‘assaults’ TV reporter
Dhaka: A private TV channel reporter was assaulted allegedly by an Awami League MP at Monipur High School in the city’s Mirpur on Tuesday.
Aparna Singha, staff reporter of RTV, went to the school in the morning to report on an allegation that the school was charging extra fees for admission.
Mirpur MP ‘manhandles’ journalist
Dhaka, Jan 3 (bdnews24.com) – Ruling Awami League MP Kamal Ahmed Majumder allegedly beat up a journalist at Monipur High School in the city’s Mirpur on Tuesday.
Private TV channel RTV said Majumder attacked their staff reporter Aparna Singha who went to the school in the morning to make a report on an allegation of charging extra fees for admission.
The MP, however, denied the allegation saying he ‘only pushed aside’ the reporter.
Guardians of Monipur High School students had been protesting against a decision to charge Tk 20,000 for development fees beside the government-fixed Tk 5,000 admission fees, RTV joint news editor Aktar Hossain said.
Canal reclamation drive falls flat Top ruling party men resist eviction
Eviction of illegal encroachers from the four out of six canals in the capital city Dhaka by the end of October, a dateline set earlier by the government, has miserably failed.
The national task force, formed with a view to preserve navigability of rivers and other watercourse, instructed the concerned authorities to free the six canals in the capital and its surrounding areas from the land grabbers and evict all illegal structures from those canals. The six canals are Katashur, Kalyanpur- A and Kalyanpur- C, Shyampur, Ramchandrapur and Hazaribagh.

The Bangladesh Airlines Pilots Association (BAPA) called off its strike yesterday night and decided to join work following the assurance of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
In the wake of flight disaster for a wildcat strike by the Biman pilots Sheikh Hasina held an emergency meeting at her official residence Ganabhaban yesterday evening to break the crisis.
General secretary of the Bangladesh Airline Pilots Association (BAPA) M A Basit Mahtab told the reporters about the decision after an hour-long meeting with the PM.
Mahtab said that the prime minister had assured the two-member pilots’ delegation that she would address the pilots’ demands.
BNP leaders tell Juba Dal meet: Mass-movement if mid-term polls’ demand not met
BNP Standing Committee member Dr Khandker Mosharraf Hossain yesterday again demanded midterm polls, otherwise he warned of waging a strong mass-movement to realize the demand.
Meanwhile, Juba Dal President Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal announced that if the Government evicts Khaleda Zia from her cantonment residence, the house of Dhanmondi 32 will also be evicted.
“The Bangabandhu Museum will be turned into Liberation War Museum and the portrait of Ziaur Rahman will be placed there,” he also announced.
Khandker Mosharraf Hossain made the demand while he was addressing a gathering as the chief guest where Juba Dal President made the announcement in his presidential speech.
Army sues 60 people over Rupganj clash
Army has filed a case over the last Saturday’s Rupganj clash between the locals and the law enforcers.
East Bengal Regiment’s Warrant Officer Aminur Rahman filed the case around 12:30 am yesterday against 50-60 unidentified people for attempting to murder army personnel and beating them, vandalism, loot and arson at an army camp.
Forkan Sikder, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rupganj Police Station told The New Nation yesterday that Army had filed a case over the Rupganj incident.
Jamaat announces series of programmes
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami yesterday announced a series of programmes beginning today, demanding unconditional release of detained party leaders.
ATM Azharul Islam, acting secretary general of the party announced it at a press briefing at party’s central office at Moghbazar in the city. He said that Jamaat will organise rallies across the country today demanding unconditional release of all leaders and activists of the party including Jamaat Ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami, Secretary General Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujaheed, nayeb-e-ameer Delawar Hossain Sayedee, and assistant secretaries general M Qamaruzzaman and Abdul Quader Mollah.

Viqarunnissa Noon School and College, the best reputed women educational institution in the country, will lose from now on the brilliant and meritorious students following introduction of lottery system in admission, claimed Guardians Forum of the school yesterday.
The forum also alleged that this system would encourage bribes and corruption during admission and the institution would lose its towering reputation.
The parents and guardians of the admission seeking students under the banner of the ‘Guardians Forum’ held demonstration in the city yesterday, for the third day, to protest against the lottery system admission in Viqarunnissa. BNP announces 3-day agitation

Warning that non-stop action course will be launched if the Government doesn’t shun misrule, misdeeds and undemocratic activities, the main opposition BNP announced a three-day countrywide agitation programme.
According to the programme, demonstrations in divisional headquarters will be held on October 20, at district-level on October 24 and upazila-level on October 27.
BNP Secretary General Khandker Delwar Hossain announced the programme at a pre-procession rally at Muktangan in the capital yesterday protesting the Government’s repression, harassment to the oppositions and intervention in administration and judiciary. Khandker Delwar alleged that the government had failed to resolve the crisis of the country’s people and it was not sincere to redress public sufferings for its undemocratic attitude.
Depression unleashes humanitarian disaster in coastal belts: 15 die, 200 fishermen missing, thousands marooned

With at least 15 people reportedly dead and 200 fishermen missing in the Bay caused by depression induced incessant rainfall and storm submerging the coastal region of the country is now faced with a humanitarian disaster.
The coastal belts from Cox’s Bazar to Mongla have been flooded with five to seven feet seawater that marooned several lakhs of people.
According to reports received from southern districts, the incessant rains coupled with high tide in the Bay caused inundating of low-lying areas and submerged many parts of Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Feni, Laxmipur, Bhola, Barisal, Patuakhali, Barguna, Chandpur, Pirojpur, Jhalokathi, Bagerhat, Khulna and Satkhira districts.
Fresh unrest in Garment Sector : 3 factories closed in Ashulia
Three export-oriented garment units of Dynasty Group at Ashulia declared lay-off for an indefinite period from Tuesday following workers’ unrest.
Police sources said workers of the three units came to know about the closure when they reached their working places around 8:00am.
Finding the factories closed, the workers became angry with the owners, who gave a notice of lay-off for an indefinite period and they started agitation demanding the factories’ reopening.
Being agitated, the workers beat up Human Resources Officer Nuruzzaman Chowdhury and locked the main gate of those factories located on the same compound from inside, forcing all to stay there.

The new Chief Justice, ABM Khairul Haque, yesterday urged the Government to reprint the Constitution containing its original provisions as these were automatically reestablished with the Fifth Amendment verdict.
He said this at a reception in the Supreme Court after taking oath at a ceremony at Bangabhaban.
Expressing satisfaction over formation of special parliamentary committee on constitutional amendment, the CJ said all Articles except the basic features of the Constitution can be changed in parliament. The basic features that include republic characters, democracy, rule of law and independence of judiciary were made on the basis of the spirit of the freedom fighters, who fought to make Bangladesh an independent country.
Noman released from jail

Oliullah Noman, special correspondent of Amar Desh, was released after serving one month imprisonment from the Central Jail on Thursday.
Noman was the first journalist in the country to embrace imprisonment in a contempt case.
Accompanied by his professional colleagues, journalists’ leaders, lawyers and civil society members, Noman came out of Dhaka Central Jail at about 10.00 am.
BFUJ president Ruhul Amin Gazi, noted columnist Syed Abul Maksud, deputy editor of Amar Desh Abdal Ahmed, city editor Zahed Chowdhury, lawyers and family members were present at the jail gate to receive him.
