Waste cleaning underway in full swing in city

DHAKA: The cleaning programme of Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) is underway with a target to remove an estimated 22,000 tonnes of waste, because of Eid-ul-Azha, by Thursday.

WI wins series 1-0

Dhaka, Nov 2 (bdnews24.com) — Devendra Bishoo took four quick wickets to power West Indies to beat Bangladesh by 229 runs in the second cricket test Wednesday as the visitors clinched the two-match series 1-0.

Bangladesh was dismissed for 278 in the penultimate session of the match amid tight bowling by the visitors.

Bangladesh had been 263-6 at lunch, chasing a challenging target of 508 with two sessions remaining.

Bangladesh resumed Wednesday at 164-3 and batted confidently until losing Tamim Iqbal (83), Shakib Al Hasan (55) and Mushfiqur Rahim (69) before lunch.

Easy wins for Sylhet, Khulna

Dhaka, Nov 1 (bdnews24.com) – Sylhet and Khulna won their respective NCL matches against Rangpur and Dhaka with a day to spare on Tuesday.

Elsewhere, leaders Dhaka Metro were in a strong position going into the fourth and final day of their game against Barisal. Holders Rajshahi were locked in an intriguing battle with Sylhet.

Consolation win for Tigers

Opener Tamim Iqbal’s blistering 61 from 53 balls and quick 28 off 20 by Imrul Kayes gave visiting Bangladesh a consolation six-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the fourth one-dayer of the five-match ODI series at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo on Friday.

Kayes blasted three boundaries and two sixes during his 28-run innings while Tamim played nine eye-catching boundaries during his 61-run innings.

The visitors reached their target in 36. 4 overs as skipper Shakib Al Hasan 35 (43) and Shuvagoto Hom 36 (39) were unbeaten in the crease at the last moment of the innings.

Tigers complete maiden win on tour

Dhaka: Bangladesh defeated Zimbabwe by six wickets in the fourth of the five-match UCB one-day international series at Queens Sports Club ground in Bulawayo, on Friday.

Earlier, Zimbabwe set a 200-run target for Bangladesh with the help of Brendan Taylor’s (106) ton.

The fifth and final game is on Sunday.

Actual investment in EPZs up by over 41pc

The actual investment in the country’s eight export processing zones (EPZs) grew by 41.10 per cent to US$ 314 million during the immediate past fiscal year (FY), according to official statistics released Wednesday.

Officials said the investment witnessed a robust growth mainly due to expansion of the existing plants as well as new endowments from foreign direct investment and joint and local ventures.

The cumulative investment in the eight EPZs has been $ 2.12 billion since 1983.

Apart from expansion of factories, the export processing zones authority has approved 493 new enterprises to set up factories during the period.

Fresh NATO raids rock Tripoli, UN denounces war crimes

TRIPOLI: Fresh NATO air raids shook Tripoli early Thursday as the United Nations accused both Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi’s regime and rebel forces of committing crimes against humanity in their 15-week conflict.

A series of six blasts at around 12:35 am (2235 GMT Wednesday) were followed by several more a few minutes later in the Libyan capital, the target of NATO air raids for more than a week now, an AFP correspondent reported.

GOVERNMENT WILL PROVIDE FIRMING LOAN TRHOUGH MICROCREDIT PROCESS.

 
A planning is under process to disburse small loans to small entrepreneurs in the fisheries and livestock sector by the government. “The ministry is preparing a proposal in this regard,” fisheries and livestock minister Abdul Latif Biswas told on Thursday. Loans ranging from Tk 10,000 to 30,000 would be given to unemployed but trained youths and farm entrepreneurs, he said.


“If the entrepreneurs want to raise livestock, poultry or farm fish, half of their loans will be provided in cash, while the livestock with the rest,” Biswas said. The fund will, however, be a revolving one. It will begin work by coordinating all the running microcredit programmes under the ministry.

Unite to fight diseases

Sheikh Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday urged the development partners to help design sub-regional and regional programmes to combat communicable diseases like avian and swine flu.

“Along with communicable diseases, the non-communicable diseases–diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, stroke, mental health, thalassemia and autism–should get due importance as they account for 60 percent of global mortality with 80 percent in developing countries,” she said.

Hasina made the call while addressing the 64th session of the World Health Assembly at the UN office here in the afternoon.

Mymensingh reach final

Mymensingh DSA advanced to the final of the 31st Inter-District Cricket Championship beating Comilla DSA by two runs in D/L method in the first semifinal at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur Tuesday, reports UNB.

Mymensingh will play the final Friday against the winners of Sylhet DSA or Rajshahi DSA who meet today (Wednesday) in the other semis at the same venue.

Batting first after winning the toss in the day’s semis, Mymensingh scored 198 for 7 in 50 overs with opener Uttam Sarkar contributing 89 runs and lower order Arafat Salauddin scoring 62 runs.
